Life does not change unless you have the courage to take risks and step into the unknown. Discover why growth, freedom, and true strength begin where fear ends.
“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage,” said my favorite writer, Anaïs Nin, and I often remind myself of her wise words. We can be so soft, so fearful, so willing to settle. So often, we remain in familiar yet unfulfilling situations—or in ones where everyone is suffering—and still, we do nothing.
Out of laziness, fear, or cowardice, we dismiss with a wave of the hand everything life might still have in store for us. Our desire for security is so strong that we don’t even notice we are no longer truly living—we are merely trying to survive life.
We don’t dare to take a step because we are afraid. We try to hold on to what we have already gained, what we once worked for, and we refuse to let it go at any cost. We guard it like a precious treasure, even though its true value may have already faded—or perhaps it no longer exists at all. But if we constantly focus on what we might lose, we cannot move forward. Of course, we must also consider our potential losses realistically, not in a dreamlike way—but sometimes, we have to take risks.
To take risks, and at the same time carefully consider where we are stepping, where we are leaping—and to trust that life will guide things in the right direction, that everything will unfold as it should. To face change with humility and grace, and not to leave behind people or situations in a dishonorable way. Because dishonest actions always find their way back to us. Whenever possible, we should not leave unfinished matters behind, because life treats us with the same fairness that we show toward ourselves and others.
When a person dares to step into a space that is prepared yet still full of uncertainty, they often realize how timidly, how cautiously, and without faith they have been living their everyday life. Of course, we do not have to change the world every single day—but if each day we do something we believe we are not brave enough to do, we will face life’s challenges with greater strength and inner stability.
Life requires courage, because only those can truly win who dare to take steps, to change, to begin something new and unknown—and who are capable of leaving behind people and situations when necessary. Those who believe in themselves, and in the idea that the challenges life brings them forward, will discover something essential:
The most important person they can rely on, in every situation, has been with them all along—because that person is themselves.
There is no need to place our trust outside of ourselves, to remain stuck in emptiness, or to depend on something external. We can always begin again—at any moment—even a completely new life.
Courage is not the absence of fear.
It is the decision to move anyway.
